Cables

Cables are the parts most often missing from a second-hand Xbox and the parts most often blamed for faults they didn’t cause. A console that gives no picture is usually a cable problem before it’s a console problem — so start here before you take anything apart.
AV cables: what plugs into what
The Original Xbox uses a proprietary AV connector on the console side. That single connector carried composite, S-Video, RGB SCART, component and even VGA depending on which official cable pack you had — the console detects the cable type and switches its output accordingly.
Original Xbox AV Cable — the genuine Microsoft composite lead (yellow/red/white RCA). The
baseline: it works on any TV with RCA inputs, on any revision.
Xbox 360 AV Cable for Original Xbox — an adapter that lets you use Xbox 360 AV cables on the
Original Xbox. Useful if you already own a 360 component cable and want a better picture than composite.
A note on picture quality: composite is the softest option, and if you have a decent CRT or an upscaler, RGB SCART or component is a dramatic step up. Which of those you can reach depends on the cable, not on the console.
Power
Xbox Power Cable — the genuine Microsoft mains lead to the PSU. Every replacement PSU still needs one of these, and it’s the item most often lost when a console changes hands.

USB to Xbox Port Adapter Cable — the piece that makes softmodding possible. The Xbox controller port is electrically USB with a different plug, so this cable lets you connect a normal USB stick and move a save file onto the console’s hard drive. Buying advice in one line: get the genuine AV and power cables for reliability, and get the USB adapter only if you’re actually going to softmod.
