Start here, before you buy anything
Almost every question in Original Xbox modding has the same first answer: it depends on your revision. Can you TSOP flash it? Depends on the revision. Does it have the clock capacitor that eats motherboards? Depends on the revision. Will that power supply fit? Depends on the revision. Will a modchip drop straight onto the LPC header, or do you need to rebuild half of it first? Depends on the revision.
Between 2001 and 2005 Microsoft quietly revised the Xbox motherboard at least eight times: 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.6b. From the outside every one of them looks like an Original Xbox. Inside, they differ in ways that decide which mods are even possible.
This guide gives you four ways to find out what you own, from “no tools, thirty seconds” to “definitive”. Do the easy ones first.
What actually changes between revisions
The short version, and the reason anyone cares:

Two things in that table are solid and worth memorising:
- 1.6 and 1.6b cannot be TSOP flashed. They use a different flash arrangement, and no amount of
bridging points will change that. If you have a 1.6, your options are softmod or a modchip with an LPC rebuild.
- 1.6 and 1.6b do not have the clock capacitor — the component that leaks and destroys boards on
earlier revisions. That is the one genuine advantage of owning a 1.6.
There is one more difference that costs people money: the power supply is not interchangeable across the whole range. The PSU connector changed during the console’s production life. Never assume a PSU from one console will fit another without checking.
Method 1 — the label on the bottom (no tools, 30 seconds)
Turn the console over. There is a manufacturer’s label with a serial number on it.
The serial number encodes when and where the console was built, and because Microsoft rolled revisions out over time, the build date narrows things down considerably. Note the full serial and any date printed on the label.
What this method can and can’t do. It gets you to a likely revision, not a certain one. Production overlapped, consoles were refurbished, and a second-hand console may have had its motherboard swapped at some point in twenty years. Treat the serial as a strong hint. If you are about to spend money or heat on the board, confirm it another way.
A refurbished-console warning: if the bottom label looks replaced, or the case screws show tool marks, assume the insides may not match the label.
Method 2 — look through the vents (no tools, but a torch)
You can learn a surprising amount without removing a single screw. Shine a bright torch through the ventilation slots on the top of the case and look at the motherboard.
The thing to look for is the clock capacitor: a small barrel-shaped surface-mount electrolytic sitting on its own near the front of the board. If you can see it, you have a 1.0–1.5. If the pads where it should be are bare, you very likely have a 1.6 or 1.6b.

Method 3 — ask the software (if the console already boots homebrew)
If your Xbox is already softmodded or chipped, this is the easiest accurate method: most custom dashboards and diagnostic tools report the motherboard revision on a system-information screen. Boot to your dashboard and look for a “System info”, “Xbox info” or equivalent page.
The same screens usually report the kernel version, which also correlates with the revision

A stock, unmodded console does not show you any of this. That’s the catch.
Method 4 — open it and read the board (definitive)
This is the answer that doesn’t lie. It takes about twenty minutes.
⚠️ Before you open anything: unplug the console from the mains and leave it unplugged. The Original Xbox power supply runs directly from mains voltage and its internal capacitors can hold a dangerous charge after being disconnected. Never open the PSU casing. Work with the console unplugged, on a non-conductive surface, and ground yourself against static.
Getting in
The case screws are Torx and are hidden — several sit under the rubber feet, and the remainder under the labels on the bottom of the case.
With the lid off, lift out the DVD drive and the hard drive (both have a power and a data cable — note where they go), and you can see the whole motherboard.
What to look for on the board
- Silkscreen markings. Microsoft printed revision-related markings on the board itself. This is
the most direct evidence available.
- The video encoder chip. Different revisions shipped with different encoders — Conexant, Focus
and Xcalibur parts appear across the range, and the encoder is a large, clearly labelled chip.
- The clock capacitor. Present on 1.0–1.5, absent on 1.6/1.6b. Its presence or absence is a
reliable coarse split.
- The LPC header. On 1.6/1.6b it is not fully populated, which is why those boards need an LPC
rebuild before a modchip will work.
Photograph everything before you unplug it. Twenty minutes of phone photos saves an hour of guessing during reassembly.
What to do once you know
You have a 1.0 – 1.5:
- Deal with the clock capacitor first. Not later. It is actively damaging your board right now.
- TSOP flashing is on the table, as is a straightforward modchip install, as is a softmod.
- Ageing electrolytics are worth addressing — see the Set of motherboard capacitors (excluding clock

You have a 1.6 or 1.6b:
- No clock capacitor. One less thing to worry about.
- No TSOP flashing, ever. Modchips need an LPC rebuild.
- Softmodding is almost certainly your route, and it works exactly as well on a 1.6 as on a 1.0.

FAQ
Is one revision better than the others? For modding, earlier is generally more flexible — 1.0–1.5 give you TSOP flashing and easy modchip installs. For long-term survival, the 1.6 and 1.6b have the advantage of no clock capacitor. There is no single “best”.
Can I tell the revision from the outside of the case? Only indirectly, via the serial number on the bottom label. The case, ports and buttons are the same across revisions. Anyone claiming to identify a revision from a photo of the front is guessing.
My console was sold as a 1.6 but the seller never opened it. Should I trust that? No. Sellers routinely repeat whatever the previous owner said. Check it yourself before you buy parts.
Does the DVD drive brand tell me the revision? No. Microsoft sourced drives from Thomson, Philips, Samsung and Hitachi-LG across the production run, and there is only a loose correlation with build date. Drive brand matters for reliability, not for identification.
Does the revision affect which games I can play? No. All revisions play the same retail games. Revision only affects hardware modding and repair.
Parts for the job
Opening a console usually means discovering that something else needs attention:
- Original Housing Screws Set — for the console you bought with two screws missing, or for when a
screw strips on the way out.
- Replacement TPU Feet with screw hole — the original feet rarely survive being removed. These
screw in properly instead of relying on twenty-year-old adhesive.
- Set of motherboard capacitors (excluding clock capacitor) — if you have the board out anyway
and it’s a 1.0–1.5, this is the moment.
- Xbox Softmodding Kit — once you know your revision, this is the fastest route to a modded
console on any of them.

A note on the “1.5”
You will see version 1.5 mentioned in older guides and forum posts. It is worth knowing that no such board has ever actually been confirmed. The reports date back to around 2004 and are now generally thought to have been in error, so it is likely no console was ever built to that specification. Where we mention 1.5 below, read it as a revision that was long assumed to exist rather than one you are likely to be holding.
Reading the serial number
The serial is printed on the label underneath the console, and also shows up as S/N in the stock dashboard’s connection test. It reads as LNNNNNN YWWFF:
- L — which production line inside the factory
- NNNNNN — the unit number within that work week
- Y — last digit of the production year
- WW — week number within that year
- FF — the factory code
Start at the end. Factory 03 is Hungary and always a 1.0, shipped with a Thomson drive. Factory 02 is Mexico: a 1.0 if it was built before November 2002, a 1.1 after that. 05 is China, meaning 1.1 or later, and 06 is Taiwan, meaning 1.2 or later. Those last two do not pin it down on their own, but they do rule out a 1.0.
The manufacturing date on the same label narrows it further. Roughly: 1.0 runs from January 2001 to October 2002, 1.1 from August 2002 to January 2003, 1.2 from December 2002 to March 2003, 1.3 from March to August 2003, 1.4 from August 2003 to April 2004, 1.6 from March to June 2004, and 1.6b from September 2004 onwards. Those ranges overlap, which is why the serial matters. And a refurbished console can carry any board behind any label, so treat the outside as a strong hint rather than proof.
Checking it from the dashboard
On a stock console, Settings → System Info shows a K value: the kernel version. The mapping is narrow at the start and wide at the end:

On a modded console, UnleashX will report a version if you press Y on the main menu, and EvolutionX shows it bottom left. Both are guesses based on what the software can see, and they are reliable mainly for telling a 1.6 apart from everything older.
Two things you can see without opening it
Look at the AV socket on the back. On a 1.6 or 1.6b a strip of metal shielding is exposed along the bottom edge of the socket; on earlier consoles it is not. On a translucent Special Edition case you can also spot an extra screw post that only the earlier models have.
What the board itself tells you
The video encoder is the clearest marker: Conexant on 1.0 through 1.3, Focus on the 1.4, and Xcalibur on the 1.6 and 1.6b.
The power supply connector changes at the 1.2. A 1.0 and 1.1 use a single row of twelve pins; from the 1.2 onwards it is a twenty-pin connector in two rows. The 1.6 keeps that same shape but wires it differently, so a supply that physically fits is not automatically the right one.
Parts for your revision
Once you know which board you have, these are the parts that fit it.
- Original Xbox Motherboard V1.4 — A v1.4 board, if you are replacing a dead one like for like.
- Original Xbox Motherboard V1.6A (Used) — A tested v1.6a board. Note that 1.6 boards need a different softmod route than 1.0–1.5.
- Set of motherboard capacitors (excluding clock capacitor) — The electrolytic capacitors on the board. The clock capacitor is deliberately not in this set.
- Original Housing Screws Set — The Torx screws you need to open the console, including the ones under the rubber feet.
