Read this first: the clock capacitor is not in this set. The infamous Xbox clock capacitor is the separate barrel cap that keeps the system clock running while the console is unplugged, and it is the one that leaks, eats through nearby traces and kills boards. It is not included here, and that is intentional: the accepted fix in the modding scene is to remove it entirely and never replace it. You lose nothing but the clock remembering the time while unplugged. If you searched for “xbox clock capacitor”, what you need to do is desolder it, clean the residue and check the traces underneath — not buy a new one.

Installation
Difficulty: Advanced. This is a soldering job on a multi-layer board with large ground planes. You need a temperature-controlled iron (60 W+ or hot tweezers), desoldering braid, flux and isopropyl alcohol. Budget 1–2 hours if you have recapped before. Work one capacitor at a time and respect polarity — the stripe marks the negative leg.

The clock capacitor itself sits on revisions 1.0 through 1.5 and is absent on 1.6/1.6b, which is why 1.6 owners never see the classic leakage damage.
Waarom juist een 1.4 of 1.6 hier baat bij heeft. De condensatoren op de voedingsrail bij de PSU-connector zijn op die twee revisies de grootste boosdoeners. Falen ze, dan krijg je beeldstoring of start de console helemaal niet meer. Een console uit 2003–2005 die nooit open is geweest, heeft dit vrijwel zeker nodig. Vervangen brengt zo'n bord vaak gewoon terug tot leven.

Er zijn dus geen aparte sets voor 1.2, 1.3 en 1.5 nodig: 1.2 tot en met 1.4 delen hetzelfde bord en dus dezelfde lijst, en een 1.5 heeft nooit bestaan. Een 1.6b gebruikt dezelfde set als een 1.6.

Frequently asked questions
Why isn't the clock capacitor included? Because it should not be replaced. Remove it and leave the spot empty.
My board already has clock capacitor damage. Does this set fix it? No. Leakage damage means corroded traces that have to be cleaned and, if broken, bridged with wire. Recapping comes after that repair, not instead of it.
Do I need to recap if my Xbox still works? Not urgently, but it is preventative. Symptoms of failing caps are intermittent no-boot, video dropouts and instability that worsens as the console warms up.
Which revision do I have? Check the sticker on the underside of the console and the board silkscreen.
