The stock Original Xbox fan is a 70mm sleeve-bearing unit that has had twenty years to get noisy, and swapping it for a Noctua is one of the cheapest quality-of-life upgrades you can make. The problem is that the NF-A6x25 is a 60mm fan and the Xbox mount is not. This 3D printed adapter bridges that gap: it holds the Noctua at the correct position over the heatsinks and screws into the existing mounting points.

Installation

Difficulty: Moderate. Tools: Torx driver for the housing, Phillips for the fan mount. No soldering unless your fan header needs rewiring. Time: 20-30 minutes.

Open the console, remove the stock fan and shroud, fit the Noctua into the adapter, and mount the assembly onto the existing points.

Hoe de fan vastzit. De hoofdventilator klemt met twee clipjes in de onderste helft van de behuizing — er zitten geen schroeven in. Die bevestiging is over de hele productiereeks gelijk gebleven.

Heb je een 1.0, dan zit daar bovendien een aparte ventilator op het koelblok van de GPU. Die is met een 40 mm-fan en een eigen adapter te vervangen; vanaf de 1.1 is dat koelblok passief en is die plek vrij.

Frequently asked questions

Is the fan included? No. This is the adapter only. The Noctua NF-A6x25 with adapter listing includes both.

Will a 60mm fan cool as well as the stock 70mm? The NF-A6x25 moves less air than the stock fan at full tilt but runs dramatically quieter. For a stock-clocked console it is fine; if you have added an upgraded HDD and run long sessions, keep an eye on temperatures.

Will the print melt? Depends on the filament — see the VERIFY note above.

Can I still fit the DVD drive after installing it? Yes, the adapter stays within the stock fan envelope.
