A Hitachi-LG GDR-8050L optical drive pulled from an Original Xbox, tested and reading. Microsoft second-sourced the console’s DVD drive from several manufacturers over the production run, and which one you have has real consequences — for disc reading, for tray reliability, and for how you go about modding.
This one is tested to read original Xbox game discs and DVDs before it’s listed. If your existing drive grinds, refuses to spin up, or throws dirty-disc errors on discs you know are clean, a tested donor drive is usually a better use of your evening than trying to recalibrate a worn laser.
What's in the box
- 1× Hitachi-LG GDR-8050L DVD drive, genuine pull
No IDE cable, no power cable, no bracket — those are sold separately (see Related).
Installation
Difficulty: Easy. Case open (T20 Torx), unplug the IDE ribbon and the yellow power cable from the old drive, lift the drive and bracket out, transfer the bracket, reconnect, close up. No soldering required. 20–30 minutes.
Compatibility
Fabrieksmatig zat deze drive alleen in de 1.6 en 1.6b — maar hij is niet tot die revisies beperkt. Zie hieronder.
Drives zijn onderling uitwisselbaar. Je kunt een drive uit een andere Xbox in de jouwe zetten, ongeacht welke revisie hij oorspronkelijk kwam. Welk merk er fabrieksmatig in zat, verschilt wel per revisie: Thomson zat in de 1.0 tot en met 1.4, Philips over de hele reeks, Samsung in alles, en Hitachi uitsluitend in de 1.6 en 1.6b. Dat zegt iets over wat je aantreft, niet over wat werkt.
Waar het wel om gaat is betrouwbaarheid. Philips- en Hitachi-drives vallen het minst uit. Thomson-drives — die in de eerste twee Xbox-versies zaten — staan bekend om de melding "dirty disc" en zijn de meest vervangen drive van de vier.
Let op één ding: een gewone IDE-dvd-speler uit een pc past er ook in, maar dan leest de console alleen zelfgebrande schijfjes en herkent hij geen disc meer vanuit het dashboard. Een échte Xbox-drive heb je nodig om alles te laten werken zoals het hoort.
Hitachi-drives horen samen met Philips bij de betrouwbaarste van de vier merken, wat deze een verstandige vervanger maakt voor een versleten Thomson.
