A softmod replaces the stock dashboard with an unlocked one: install your own games to the hard drive, run emulators and applications, back up your saves. It is reversible if you follow the tool’s uninstall path.

Installation
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. No tools and no soldering — the work is following instructions on screen. Plan for 30–60 minutes including reading the documentation. Take your time on the backup step; the tool prompts you to make one and you will want it.
Compatibility
Softmodding is a software exploit, so it works across the board where hardmods do not. All revisions from 1.0 through 1.6b are supported, including 1.6/1.6b consoles that cannot be TSOP-flashed. You need a working console that boots to the stock dashboard, a working DVD drive or an existing way to launch the exploit, and a controller port.

What am I actually paying for? The hardware and the service of writing the files onto the stick correctly. The software is open source under GNU GPL v3 and is documented on Rocky5's official GitHub repository — you are not buying the software.
Is this legal? The kit is intended for legal use only: homebrew, backups of discs you own, and preservation. Do not use it to circumvent copyright.
Can I undo it? Yes. Rocky5's tool includes an uninstall path that returns the console to stock.
Does it upgrade my hard drive too? No, that is a separate job. Softmodding is the step that makes an HDD upgrade possible.
