If you are putting a new hard drive in an Original Xbox, the ribbon cable is not the place to cut corners. This is a 40-pin, 80-wire IDE cable with the connector orientation matched to the Original Xbox layout, so it routes the way the factory cable does instead of fighting the chassis.
The extra 40 conductors in an 80-wire cable are ground lines interleaved between the signal lines — they cut crosstalk, which matters as soon as you ask the bus to run faster than the stock configuration.

Installation
Difficulty: Easy, with one caveat: this cable needs to be folded before use and is slightly longer than the original. Fold it neatly along the existing creases so it tucks under the DVD drive — an unfolded cable will not let the drive seat properly.
Tools: Torx driver for the housing. No soldering. Time: 15 minutes.

De aansluiting op het moederbord. De Xbox gebruikt een gewone 40-pins IDE-connector, twee rijen van twintig, net als een pc uit dezelfde tijd. De datalijnen hebben serieweerstanden van 33 ohm op het bord zelf.
Let op de plaats van je schijven. Pin 28 — cable select — ligt op het moederbord aan massa. Bij een 40-aderige kabel loopt die pin door naar beide stekkers, bij een 80-aderige kabel is hij daar juist tussenuit gehaald. De positie van een schijf aan de kabel kan dus uitmaken. Wordt een schijf niet herkend, verwissel dan eerst de twee stekkers voordat je verder zoekt.
Wanneer je deze kabel echt nodig hebt. Op een console met de originele harde schijf werkt de fabriekskabel prima. Zodra je een SSD of een moderne schijf achter een SATA-naar-IDE-adapter hangt, wordt een 80-aderige kabel wél nodig: blijft de console dan hangen op het Xbox-logo, dan is de kabel de eerste verdachte. Dat is de reden om deze te kopen — niet een belofte over snelheid.

Frequently asked questions
Why does it need folding? It is slightly longer than the stock cable so it can suit more layouts. Folding takes up the slack and keeps it clear of the drive.
Can I run an HDD and the DVD drive on it? That is the stock arrangement — one channel, master and slave.
Will this fix a "no HDD found" error? Sometimes. A cracked or tired stock cable does cause intermittent drive detection. Rule out the HDD itself first.
Do I need to fold it exactly like the original? Not exactly, but keep the folds tidy and avoid sharp creases across the connector pins.
