The Minebea 2810KL-04W-B50 is another of the OEM 70mm cooling fans found in Original Xbox consoles. Minebea (NMB) built these to industrial spec and they’re generally among the better-wearing units of the bunch — which is exactly why they’re worth pulling and re-using rather than throwing a no-name replacement at the problem.

Fit one if your stock fan ticks, stalls, only starts when warm, or has been removed by a previous owner and never replaced. A console running without airflow will still boot; it just won’t do it for long.

Installation

Difficulty: Easy. Case open with a T20 Torx driver, old fan unplugged and unclipped, new fan in with the airflow arrow the same way round, plug in. No soldering required. Roughly 15 minutes start to finish.

Compatibility

Fits the Original Xbox 70mm fan position and shroud. This fan slot was second-sourced by Microsoft, so Minebea, Nidec, Delta and Sunon units are all found in consoles of the same era.

Over de fan-aansluiting op het bord. Het moederbord heeft op élke revisie, van 1.0 tot en met 1.6b, dezelfde fan-aansluiting: één rij van drie pinnen. Staat er bij een ventilator "2-pin", dan gaat dat over de stekker aan die ventilator, niet over het bord.

Eerst smeren, dan pas vervangen. Een ventilator die luidruchtig is geworden, is meestal niet stuk maar uitgedroogd. Doorsmeren geeft er vaak een tweede leven aan en kost niets. Helpt dat niet, dan zijn de lagers of de motor versleten en is vervangen de juiste stap. Let ook op dat het geluid van je console net zo goed uit de harde schijf of de dvd-drive kan komen.
