A used Original Xbox v1.6a motherboard, tested and working. The 1.6 series is the last motherboard generation Microsoft produced for the console, and it is genuinely a different animal to the earlier boards — which matters enormously if you’re buying it to mod rather than simply to repair.
Read this before you buy: the listing states that this board requires a recap. It is sold as a project. Do not order it unless you can replace the electrolytic capacitors yourself or have someone lined up to do it.

Installation
Difficulty: Advanced. This is not a drop-in part.
Soldering is required — the board needs a recap before service. You’ll be desoldering and replacing electrolytic capacitors on a 20-year-old multi-layer board, which needs a decent temperature-controlled iron, flux, braid and patience. Plan on 2–4 hours for the recap, plus another hour to transfer everything from your donor console.
Tools: temperature-controlled soldering iron, desoldering braid or pump, flux, isopropyl alcohol, T20 Torx for the case.
Compatibility
This is a 1.6a board. It is not interchangeable with 1.0–1.5 in the ways that matter for modding:
- TSOP flashing is not possible on 1.6 / 1.6b boards. If your plan was a TSOP flash, this board is the wrong purchase. Softmodding works fine; a modchip works with the right install.
- Modchip installs differ. 1.6 boards need extra work at the LPC header compared with earlier revisions.
- 1.6 boards use the Xcalibur video encoder rather than the Conexant/Focus encoders of earlier revisions.
- No clock capacitor. The notorious leaking clock cap of the earlier revisions is not present on 1.6, which is why our capacitor set is sold "excluding clock capacitor".
- Uses the standard Original Xbox DVD drive, hard drive, power supply and controller ports.
On the naming. The modding community recognises two late boards, 1.6 and 1.6b, and the only documented difference between them is the memory: 1.6 boards carry Samsung chips and 1.6b boards Hynix, with different timings. "1.6a" is not a designation the reference material uses, so if you see it, read it as a seller's way of saying "a 1.6, not a 1.6b".

Start een 1.6 niet op, terwijl alles er goed uitziet? Er is één storing die alleen op deze revisie voorkomt: de transistor Q7C2 moet boven 3,3 volt blijven. Zakt hij daaronder, dan start de console niet, hoe gezond de rest ook is. Hij is te vervangen door een MMBT3906LT1. Handig om te weten voordat je een bord afschrijft — of voordat je er een koopt.
Denk daarnaast aan de clock capacitor: een 1.6 start helemaal niet zonder werkende exemplaar en geeft dan foutcode 16.

Frequently asked questions
Can I TSOP flash this board? No. TSOP flashing is not available on 1.6-series boards. Softmod it, or fit a modchip.
Does "requires a recap" mean it's broken? It means it's a project board, not a plug-in replacement. Budget for the capacitor set and the bench time before you order.
Will my existing hard drive work in it?
Is a 1.6a worse than a 1.0? Not worse — different. 1.6 boards avoid the clock-cap leak entirely, but give up TSOP flashing and need more care on a modchip install.
