An original Thomson DVD drive as fitted to Original Xbox consoles, tested and working. Xbox optical drives are the first thing to fail on these machines: lasers weaken, trays stop opening, and discs that used to load start spinning up and giving up. Replacing the drive is the standard fix and it is one of the easier jobs inside the console.

Installation
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. T20 for the housing, . No soldering. Disconnect the IDE ribbon and the drive power lead, unscrew the bracket, swap the drive, reconnect. Around 20–30 minutes.
Compatibility
Dit is de drive die in de 1.0 tot en met 1.4 zat. Hij past ook in latere consoles; drives zijn onderling uitwisselbaar.
Drives zijn onderling uitwisselbaar. Je kunt een drive uit een andere Xbox in de jouwe zetten, ongeacht welke revisie hij oorspronkelijk kwam. Welk merk er fabrieksmatig in zat, verschilt wel per revisie: Thomson zat in de 1.0 tot en met 1.4, Philips over de hele reeks, Samsung in alles, en Hitachi uitsluitend in de 1.6 en 1.6b. Dat zegt iets over wat je aantreft, niet over wat werkt.
Waar het wel om gaat is betrouwbaarheid. Philips- en Hitachi-drives vallen het minst uit. Thomson-drives — die in de eerste twee Xbox-versies zaten — staan bekend om de melding "dirty disc" en zijn de meest vervangen drive van de vier.
Let op één ding: een gewone IDE-dvd-speler uit een pc past er ook in, maar dan leest de console alleen zelfgebrande schijfjes en herkent hij geen disc meer vanuit het dashboard. Een échte Xbox-drive heb je nodig om alles te laten werken zoals het hoort.
Eerlijk erbij: van de vier merken is Thomson het storingsgevoeligst. Koop deze omdat je een originele Thomson wilt houden — bijvoorbeeld om een console in de oorspronkelijke staat te laten — en niet omdat je de betrouwbaarste drive zoekt.

Frequently asked questions
Will it read burned discs? It reads original Xbox games and DVDs. Burned media depends on firmware and modding, and Thomson drives have a reputation in the scene for being the fussiest with DVD-R.
My drive opens but will not read. Same fix? Usually yes — a weak laser is not economically repairable. If instead the tray will not open at all, the belt is often the culprit and a much cheaper fix.
Do I lose my saves? No. Saves live on the hard drive; the DVD drive holds nothing.
Does the console need reconfiguring after the swap? No. It is plug-and-play.
